Tamko Shingle Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in Austin typically runs $325 to $680 for a standard repair of 10 to 20 shingles, and our trucks carry Tamko-compatible stock so most jobs are done in one visit. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a shingle in the yard after a spring thunderstorm, a dark patch spreading across the ceiling, or granules collecting in the gutter after every rain. Tamko shingles are solid products, but Austin’s heat, hail, and wind cycles will eventually wear down any asphalt shingle system, and the failure usually starts small before it gets expensive.
We’re an independent Austin roofing company, not a Tamko dealer or affiliate. That means we match the repair to your roof, not to whatever happens to be sitting in the warehouse. Greg Holloway and our crew have repaired enough Tamko roofs across Austin to know exactly how these shingles age in Texas weather, and we’ll tell you straight what needs fixing, what can wait, and what it costs before anything gets nailed down.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
This page covers the Tamko shingle lines you’re most likely to find on Austin homes: Heritage, Heritage Vintage, Heritage Woodgate, Elite Glass-Seal, and the newer Titan XT. If you bought your house new in the last 15 years or had a roof installed by a builder, there’s a strong chance it’s a Heritage-series shingle, which is Tamko’s most common architectural line in central Texas. Heritage shingles run about 13-1/4 inches wide and 39-3/8 inches long, with a standard 5-5/8-inch exposure, and the Vintage variant adds a thicker, more dimensional profile that looks closer to cedar shake.
Identifying your exact shingle matters more than people think, because Tamko changed color blends over the years and a mismatched bundle will show from the street even if the dimensions are identical. Look for a leftover bundle in the garage or attic and check the wrapper label for the series name and color code. No bundle? A good photo of the shingle surface plus a measurement of the exposure (the part you can see between the overlaps) usually gets us close enough to match before we quote. For Tamko specifically, we recommend OEM shingles whenever we can source them, because the color granules and mat thickness are consistent with what’s already on your roof. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist and are fine for older roofs where a perfect match isn’t realistic, but we’ll always tell you which option we’re quoting and why.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules in the gutters or at the downspout elbows. Tamko shingles lose surface granules as the asphalt oxidizes. A thin layer is normal wear; a thick accumulation means the shingle’s protective surface is spent and water is getting closer to the mat.
- Curling or cupped shingle edges. Austin’s summer heat bakes the asphalt until the corners lift. A curled shingle catches wind, and wind peels it back like a paperback in a storm. Once the corners are up, water has a clear path underneath.
- Cracked or missing shingles after a wind event. This is common after the March and April thunderstorm lines move through. A cracked Tamko shingle might stay in place and look fine from the ground, but the split is a leak waiting on the next heavy rain.
- Dark streaks or visible mat showing through. If you can see the dark fiberglass mat where granules used to be, that shingle is structurally compromised. This isn’t cosmetic. A shingle with exposed mat absorbs water instead of shedding it.
- Water stains on ceilings or in the attic after rain. By the time water reaches drywall, it has already passed through the shingle, the underlayment, and the decking. The stain is the last symptom to show up, not the first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, a Tamko shingle repair on a typical single-story home runs $325 to $480 for a small area (up to about 10 shingles) and $490 to $680 for a larger repair (10 to 20 shingles plus possible underlayment or flashing work). The range depends on roof pitch and height, whether the decking beneath is still sound, and how hard it is to get matching Tamko stock. A two-story roof with a steep pitch costs more because of safety equipment and setup time; that’s the honest reason, not a markup.
Every quote includes the shingles, any replacement underlayment, roofing nails, sealant, cleanup, and haul-away of old material. Before any work starts, you get a written price covering the full scope. After the repair is done, we hand you a written guarantee before the crew leaves the driveway. If that repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder: count how many shingles are missing or cracked, check the gutter for granules, and photograph the damage close up if you can reach it from a stable ladder. A ladder against the gutter is fine for a look. Walking a pitched Austin roof is not, especially in the heat of summer when shingles are soft and slick with granules. We regularly see homeowners turn a $400 shingle repair into a $2,000 decking replacement because a foot slipped through softened plywood.
Tamko shingle repair involves lifting the shingle above the damaged one, removing nails precisely, and sealing the new shingle without cracking the surrounding ones. Do it wrong and you’ve created three new leaks where there was one. Most homeowners are better off with a pro on this one. If you want to know what you’re dealing with before spending a nickel, call (254) 540-7345 and describe what you’re seeing. Greg can usually give you a ballpark over the phone and a firm written price once we look at the roof. Tell me the roof, I’ll tell you the price, no surprises once we’re up there.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, Tamko architectural shingles typically last 15 to 25 years, with the shorter end more realistic for roofs with full western exposure and no shade. Texas UV loads and hail cycles age asphalt faster than the manufacturer’s ideal-condition warranty suggests. We’ve pulled 12-year-old Tamko shingles off Austin roofs that looked fine from the street but crumbled when touched. If your roof is past year 15, call (254) 540-7345 for a free estimate on whether spots repairs make sense or replacement is the better money.
A damaged Tamko shingle can be individually replaced as long as the surrounding shingles are still bonded and the decking underneath is dry and sound. What we can’t do is patch a shingle with sealant and call it done; that’s a temporary smear, not a repair, and it will fail in the next storm. We’ll tell you plainly if the damage is isolated or if the surrounding field is too far gone to make spot repairs worthwhile, and the estimate is free either way.
Most Tamko shingle repairs take one to two hours on site, including setup, removal, replacement, sealing, and cleanup of any granules or nails that fell during the work. If the decking underneath is soft from an existing leak, the job expands because that section has to be cut out and replaced first, which can add two to three hours. We’ll see that during the estimate and it will already be in your written price.
We stock common Tamko Heritage colors in our Austin inventory and order the less common blends directly from our supplier, usually at a one to two day turnaround. We also carry GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed stock for comparison or matching older roofs. You never have to order material yourself or accept a shingle that doesn’t match your existing roof. Call (254) 540-7345 and we’ll confirm availability before you schedule anything.
